The breast roll is a rotating roll on the side of the Fourdrinier wire section near the headbox. It is driven by the wire and must be rigid enough not to bend under the wire tension. The roll body is usually rolled from seamless steel pipes or steel plates, with a rubber coating on the surface. The thickness and hardness depend on the specific situation. The breast roll must be equipped with a scraper so that the pulp does not follow the roll and get caught between the roll and the wire.
The first roller of the paper machine is the beginning of the screen table. One of its functions is to support the forming wire. The forming wire changes direction on the breast roller. After passing the breast roller, the non-working surface of the forming wire changes to the working surface. In many cases, the breast roller is also a dewatering element on the screen table. The pulp on the screen can remove part or most of the water on the breast roller.
